Keeping it Real... National Coming Out Day!! Take a Stand.

Hola! I hope you all had a fantastic and looong weekend. I am jealous of all of you that were lucky to get today off... We had to practically beg to have labor day off so ya Colombus Day? Nope not even going to try. So instead I am at work with nothing to do because everyone I am suppose to be calling or working with is off. Yah...doesn't make much sense to me either.

Anyway, I decided that I need to keep it real in my blog sometimes. I think I often hide behind a curtain of puppy dogs, sunshine and lollipops... Okay maybe that is a bit too cheesy but what I mean is I usually don't write about "deep stuff" in here and usually keep the serious stuff off the blog. I just try to protect you (or myself) from the deeper side of my life. So if I have a rant or if I have a strong opinion about something Im not going to sugarcoat it on here... Which leads me to todays post....

Today is National Coming Out Day. This is a movement that was started by the Human Rights Campaign in order for LGBT (and their straight allys) to raise awareness about gay issues. This year's theme is about the bullying that LGBTs have to endure every day. There have been many suicides this year that have occured as a result of this bullying. This year one of the big movements that the HRC is hosting to have people show support is to have peopoe donate their statuses to raise awareness. Im proud to report that so many people participated in this that it actually crashed the server. Its great to see so many people getting involved in all different ways. Something as small as your facebook status can actually make a difference, especially in a world that utilizes social networking so frequently.

Its 2010 and it makes me sad that we still live in a society that believes in inequality. I mean this is the same society that has feminists and is all about equality among all the races. So why is it okay that as a country we can decide to treat another class of people with injustice? Why is it that we can ignore the Constitution and nowt allow a certain group of people the same rights that many of us take for granted every single day? Im pretty passionate about homosexual rights because my little brother is gay. It hurts me that in most states (including my own) he cannot get married one day (hopefully this will change before he decides to get married). It hurts that he had to hide his sexuality from certain people for a while because he knew they wouldn't accpet him. I hate when I see/hear/read about people not allowing people their rights because of their sexual orientation. I am taking a small stand today against this injustice in the only way I know how.... by speaking up...I donated my status and I encouraged my friends to do the same. Too many kids are committing suicide because they are treated injusticly because of who they are. Gays, lesbians, and transgenders are not given the same rights because a group of people have decided that since they don't agree with that lifestyle that they will impose these laws which are unjust.

Take a stand... I am sure that there is someone in your life that you love that is homosexual. It doesn't make them a bad person or a criminal. They are just like you and me. Why should they be treated differently because they happen to like a member of the same sex. How would you like it if someone decided you couldn't marry someone you loved because they wear flannel (sounds ridiculous right? Its not any more ridiculous than what is happening everyday against homosexuals). What about if you couldn't tell your boss/potential boss about your boyfriend/girlfriend for fear that it will cost you your job. While I don't want to impose my opinion or beliefs onto you. I do hope that you are able to do something to support those who don't have the same rights as everyone else. If you want to find out what you can do to help click here. It could be something as small as donating your status for the day to get out the word about today or striking up a conversation with someone about these issues. You can also look if there are any events happening near you and maybe you can drop by. Or you can talk with your LGBT friends and have them share their experiences with you. I hope you all are able to take a stand today :)...

  2. That's awesome!! My big sister just came out last year and for someone her age (26) it isn't as difficult as it is for younger people, espeically those still in school, but she still does face the harsh reality of our society every now and again.

And I know!!! I think you and my husband are the only two people in the world that have to work today. LAME!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I looked around yours a little...aren't you just the prettiest ever? And you're Kevin's girlfriend! You guys are adorable. Anyhow. Have a good day at work, maybe you can get off early?

P.S. I read that you're a middle child. We're going to have our 3rd in a few months, and I'm totally worried about my son having "middle child syndrome" any tips? :)

  6. Well said girl! I couldn't agree more, and I can't imagine the prejudices that your brother has endured... I too hope he will be able to be married one day, equality sees no gender, race, or sexuality!
